Tom Eddington is one of the founders of Farming4Compassion; an initiative to support the work of Her Holiness Amma Sri Karunamayi. It’s an organization dedicated to creating organic farming projects in the San Francisco Bay Area and India to feed the homeless and malnourished. The unique business model involves taking the food that is grown in these environments to local food banks and religious organizations. They in turn work with other non-profit entities and schools that cater to malnourished children. The initial pilot is a 200-acre plot of donated land in Marin County, just north of San Francisco.
The Bay Area Farming4Compassion team is coordinating with local food banks. The India team is coordinating efforts with several organizations focused on expanding growing cooperatives and expanding organic farming in India. These pilot models have a dual purpose – to generate economic opportunities for farmers while creating an organic food source for people who don’t have easy access to good quality food. India alone has five different pilots working off plots of land in Nellore, Bangalore and outside of Delhi.
